Based on OakGate Technology’s Storage Validation Framework (SVF) and CNEX Labs’ silicon and software, the demonstration will highlight key benefits of open-channel SSDs
Santa Clara, California, August 7, 2017
— OakGate Technology, the industry leader in advanced, high-performance test solutions for flash storage, announced that it will demonstrate test products supporting Open-Channel SSDs and LightNVM at the upcoming Flash Memory Summit being held at the Santa Clara Convention Center from August 8 through 10. This demo is a result of close cooperation between OakGate Technology and CNEX Labs, an innovative semiconductor company developing solid-state storage controllers and software for cloud, hyperscale and enterprise data centers.
“OakGate is pleased to support Open-Channel SSDs -- enabled by LightNVM, the open-source Linux Open-Channel SSD subsystem -- in partnership with CNEX Labs,” said Bob Weisickle, Founder and CEO of OakGate Technology. “We have a proven track record of providing cutting edge test solutions for emerging technologies and we are proud to do the same for Open-Channel SSDs. This functionality will add a significant value to our SVF test suite which already offers the richest feature set in the industry. We look forward to assisting our customers with the deployment of this breakthrough technology into tomorrow’s flash arrays and hyperscale data centers,” added Mr. Weisickle.
As SSDs become commonplace in data-centers and storage arrays, there is a growing demand for predictable latency. Traditional SSDs incorporate a high-level of abstraction at the cost of unpredictable performance and suboptimal resource utilization. Open-Channel SSDs expose the internal parallelism of the SSD to the host and allow the host to manage it. In addition to predictable latencies and I/O isolation, Open-Channel SSDs serve as an ideal software-defined non-volatile memory.
“CNEX Labs has taken early leadership in developing Open-Channel SSD technology and delivering semiconductor and software solutions with full support for this game-changing approach to solid state storage,” said Justin Heindel, VP of Marketing & Business Development at CNEX Labs. “Our partnership with OakGate will help provide test solutions critical to bringing this transformative technology to market.”
The demonstration will take place at OakGate Technology’s booth number 807 at the 2017 Flash Memory Summit. An OakGate test appliance equipped with the company’s highly respected SVF software suite will be connected via the LightNVM Open-Channel subsystem to an SSD
featuring the CNEX Westlake Open-Channel controller. OakGate will also be demonstrating additional industry leading test solutions in its booth, please contact the company for additional details.

Designed expressly for manufacturing test environments, the Universal Manufacturing Framework (UMF) Application Software provides advanced, easy to use engine for Solid State Disks and flash storage
Loomis, Calif., August 10, 2015 — OakGate Technology, the industry leader in advanced, high performance storage test solutions for flash storage announced the industry’s most innovative application software framework for manufacturing test environments. Designed as a companion application for OakGate’s renowned Storage Validation Framework (SVF) software suite, the Universal Manufacturing Framework is highly intuitive and provides extensive capabilities that complement production test platforms for SSDs and flash storage.
“OakGate has been a well-recognized provider of test tools for development environments to major storage component, drive and system suppliers. With Universal Manufacturing Test Framework, we are extending the capabilities of our test solutions to low and high volume production as well” stated Bob Weisickle, founder and CEO, OakGate Technology. “Designed expressly with flash storage in mind, the UMF application provides user friendly GUI and individual DUT control that is ideal for operators and test engineers alike” added Mr. Weisickle.
OakGate’s UMF application engine was developed in close cooperation with one of the world’s largest supplier of enterprise class flash storage devices. This resulted in incorporation of several key features that provide advanced functionality as well as flexibility. For example, a test written for one protocol is completely portable to another protocol or platform. This allows users to leverage the investment in test scripts and automation. While the user interface is simple and intuitive, the underlying data gathering and analysis capability is extensive.
OakGate provides a comprehensive Software Development Kit (SDK) that allows customers to write their own automated test scripts for UMF. Since the hardware layer is abstracted, the SDK is very portable. The UMF software engine provides a thread for each individual DUT, giving users a high level of granularity without exposing underlying complexities. Customers also have the flexibility to select their preferred production test platform since the UMF application that is agnostic to the underlying hardware.
Universal Manufacturing Framework has already been deployed at multiple manufacturing sites of major OEM customers worldwide. OakGate will be demonstrating UMF at the 2015 Flash Memory Summit in Santa Clara. The demonstration will run on hardware platform from Tanisys Technology at OakGate’s booth # 801. Please contact OakGate for further details.

IO Throttling Enables Users to Measure Realistic Performance with the Creation of Application Specific Workloads and IO Rates
Loomis, Calif., Oct. 10, 2011 — OakGate Technology, the leader in test and validation platforms for storage and servers, announced the addition of IO Throttling capabilities to its test and validation platforms. Available immediately on all OakGate products, this feature provides the ability to measure performance that users are likely to experience in real environments.
“IO Throttling was developed based on a strong demand from many of our key customers. With more and more suppliers entering the SSD market, it has become important for users to determine the true performance of these drives under specific applications and workloads,” said Bob Weisickle, founder and CEO, OakGate Technology. “Our team took on the challenge and delivered this powerful feature in record time, further enhancing capabilities of our industry-leading test and validation platforms.”
With the IO Throttling capability, users can create application specific workloads by capping the IO at user defined values. Latency is then measured for a given IO Rate value or set of values. For every specified workload IO, the system generates statistics and histograms, and also creates performance graphs for IO Rate versus Latency and IO Rate versus Queue Depth. In addition, threshold can be set for maximum latency, and specific IO can be captured and analyzed.
“Storage system designers count on SSDs to provide fast, consistent response times under demanding, time critical workloads. Traditional HDD benchmarking tools are designed to measure IOPS under a full queue IO workload model. OakGate Technology's IO Throttling is the leading benchmarking tool designed to measure latency using an IO workload model of real storage applications,” said Marc Acosta, storage technologist in the office of the CTO, STEC, Inc. “Using the IO Throttling feature, designers can determine how SSDs can be used to reduce latency as well as improve performance in their storage applications. As a leading global provider of a comprehensive line of enterprise SSDs, we are currently using OakGate's IO Throttling capability to demonstrate how our SSDs provide fast response times over a wide range of storage workloads.”
